In years past, the Division IV Sunapee boys soccer team proved to be a tough draw for the Division III Cardinals. But Thursday, with Stevens on its home field and just one loss on its record, things weren’t exactly close.

In years past, the Division IV Sunapee boys soccer team proved to be a tough draw for the Division III Cardinals. But Thursday, with Stevens on its home field and just one loss on its record, things weren’t exactly close.

Despite a relatively slow start that saw the Cardinals substitute out all but two starters midway through the first half, Coach Jason Stone’s team simply caught fire, scoring four goals in each half on its way to an 8-1 victory over the non-divisional Lakers.

And it was Junior Ethan Sweet who started Stevens’ scoring garage, as he needed just three quick steps after collecting this pass from Mitchell Paquette before firing a shot past a diving Cole Cruz for the 1-0 lead. The Cardinals took advantage of their speed throughout the contest, cleaning up nearly every rebound opportunity that escaped the grasp of Cruz in goal.

When all was said and done it was Drew Grenier who led Stevens’ offense with hat trick, followed by a pair of goals from Ethan Sweet, and single tallies from both senior Matt Mock and Junior Colby Hussey. Mike Pezone spoke with Sweet after the game, who talked about the make-up of this year’s teams and its success of far.

Mike also spoke with Stevens head coach Jason Stone, who talked about his team’s battles with Sunapee over the years.

The Cardinals will try and improve to 7-1 Saturday when they host Fall Mountain for the annual Bernard Cup game. Sunapee will try and bounce back Tuesday against Hinsdale.
