Demolition of the old bowling alley in Newport began Thursday as phase one of construction of the new New London Hospital’s Newport Health Center began.
The take down of the building by New Hampshire Demolition will make space for some new parking so that the new health center construction can begin. The new triangular shaped building will be placed on the corner of Route 11 and Elm Street and will be 75% larger than the old building.
The 9 million dollar project will take about a year to complete and when open will be able to offer more specialty health services to the Newport community. New London Hospital has an ongoing capital Campaign to raise 2. 2 million dollars to help with the cost the new health center and once the new building is completed the old Newport Health Center building will be taken down.
Just some background, New London Hospital began offering health service to the Newport area community in 1991 after Newport Hospital closed. A ceremonial groundbreaking for the new building will take place on October 13 at 4pm.
