The city of Lebanon has hired a new police chief. The city manager’s office announced Thursday afternoon that Richard R. Mello will take the position starting on December 20th.
Mello is currently second in command at the Hollis New Hampshire Police Department where he has worked since 2002, working his way up the ranks from patrol officer to lieutenant.
Mello takes the place of Lebanon Police Chief Gary Smith, who retired in May of this year, after 28 years of working for the Upper Valley city. Mello is also a teacher, having graduated from Florida State University and has a masters degree in Criminal Justice.
He has trained other officers and taught in the art of law enforcement in Massachusetts as well as having served as a guest lecturer at Southern New Hampshire University.
City manager Dennis Luttrell says that Mello’s experience will only bolster the goals and mission of the Lebanon Police Department.
