An elderly man escaped with minor injuries Saturday after the vehicle he was driving rolled off a parking lot and over an embankment before landing on its side just feet away from the Black River.
According to Springfield Police, 85-year-old William Buswell was wearing a seatbelt when his Chevy Colorado rolled over a 10-foot embankment separating the Springfield Senior Center parking lot from the river shortly after 12:30 Saturday afternoon.
Police say Buswell was being helped by several bystanders upon arrival to the scene near Clinton and Main Streets, and that the man was alert and not believed to have been impaired.
Buswell was transported to nearby Springfield Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Both the Springfield and Bellows Falls fire departments responded to the scene, as did Vermont State Police – who controlled traffic over the bridge while crews worked to remove the vehicle from the waterfront.
