Claremont Man Sentenced in Robbery
A 19-year-old Claremont man was sentenced to 12 months in county jail Monday after pleading guilty to robbing the E-Z Mart Convenience Store on Maple Avenue back in May.
A Stevens grad and stand-out athlete, Martinio Bailey was accused of robbing the store at knifepoint, making out with a bag containing $560 before fleeing down a nearby trail.
The clerk was not harmed during the incident, and Bailey was apprehended a short time later near Park Avenue. According to Sullivan County Superior Court documents, prosecutors sought a two-year sentence for the armed robbery charge, though a judge took into consideration Bailey’s good behavior since and enrollment in a local community college.
Bailey – who had no criminal record prior to his May arrest – read a brief apology in court in which he took full responsibility for his actions. Bailey could be released soon if he successfully completes counseling programs offered within the prison.
