Top-Ranked Newport Set For Division-III Semifinal Against Bow

Saturday is a big day for the Newport football team tomorrow as the top-ranked Tigers are set to take on a strong Bow team for a chance to advance to its second-straight Division III championship.

Newport heads into Saturday’s semifinal fresh off a dominant win over Somersworth in Round 1, in which the Tigers tallied more than 50 points for just the third time this season.

Senior running back Noah Wade led that effort with an impressive 5 touchdowns, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering he’s the second leading rusher in the entire state. CJ Lawrence crossed the goal line with three of his 11 touchdowns during last weekend’s semifinal, proving Newport is far more than a one-man team.

The Tigers will be up against a Bow team it didn’t face during the regular-season, after the Falcons survived a 21-14 scare against Stevens in their first-round game. Bow has allowed just 66 points all season, with half of those coming in its only loss of the year against unbeaten Winnisquam.

The Falcons will need to stop the run early if it want to take the home crowd out of the game, and prevent Newport from earning a second-straight trip to next weekend’s championship at UNH.

The Tigers shouldn’t be phased by the stage with the majority of its roster having played in last year’s semifinal against Gilford, in which Wade scored four of his team’s five touchdowns. But the Tigers came up short against Campbell in the title game to the tune of a 20-6 loss.

Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Maryn Field.
