Former Dartmouth Fraternity Suing Town of Hanover

HANOVER – A former Dartmouth College fraternity is suing the town of Hanover after a ruling by the town’s zoning board of adjustment forced 18 brothers to move out of their house.

Alpha Delta was stripped of its affiliation to the college earlier this year after it was revealed that 11 brothers had branded themselves with the fraternity’s Greek letters.

Shortly after, the fraternity received notice from the town that the house was no longer considered a student residence, thus forcing the brothers out of the 9 East Wheelock Street home.

Alpha Delta filed a lawsuit in Grafton County Superior Court after failing in its final appeal to the zoning board, claiming the fraternity has used the East Wheelock Street property since the early 1920s – long before the 1931 enactment of Hanover’s first zoning ordinance.
