Dartmouth Newspaper ID’s 28-Year-Old Found Dead

An update on a story we brought you yesterday involving the investigation into the death of a 28-year-old man found unresponsive in his Lebanon home late Friday afternoon.

The Dartmouth – the student newspaper of Dartmouth College – reports the identity of the deceased to be Scott Smedinghoff, a fourth-year graduate student working toward a doctorate in mathematics. Smedinghoff was found dead in his 4 Etna Road residence shortly after 4 o’clock Friday afternoon by Lebanon police officers conducting a wellness check.

According to Lebanon Police Chief Richard Mello, the wellness check was requested after Smedinghoff hadn’t been heard from in several days.

He added that no threat to the general public was perceived. Smedinghoff’s death remains under investigation by the Lebanon Police Department, and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit.

Smedinghoff was a pianist for the Dartmouth Wind Ensemble, and the choir director at the First Congregational Church in Thetford, Vermont.
