It was a playoff-like atmosphere during the Newport girls’ basketball showdown with Windsor Wednesday night, and fortunately, the game itself lived up to that hype.
The teams headed into the contest with similar records with Newport at 4-2 and Windsor at 4-3, but it was the home Tigers who pulled away early with help from some solid shooting by sophomore Anna Pysz, and this last second shot from Alexis Hurd to cap off the first quarter.
Unfortunately for the home team, however, the Yellow Jackets refused to do down quietly, and pulled within five points with less than two minutes remaining in the game on this bucket from Madeline Morse.
Morse led all scorers with 24 points in the contest, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Newport as the home team held on for a 54-44 victory.
The Tigers, on the other hand, were led by a Hurd with 15 points including this nifty hook shot, followed by Pysz with nine points and freshman Selena Coronis with eight. Coronis also played well defensively with a handful of steals, while Stephanie Carl – who scored five straight points in the final quarter – added several blocks.
The win was Newport’s second straight, and currently has the team ninth in the Division III standings.
Both teams will be back in action Friday with Newport traveling to face Gilford, and the Yellow Jackets heading to Rutland to face Mount St. Joseph.
