An 18-year-old Charlestown man accused of vandalizing the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Claremont on Sunday, has apologized to the church’s pastor. Father Shawn Therrien told YCN News that both Zachary Underwood, and an unidentified minor, appeared upset and very remorseful for their actions when apologizing.
Underwood was arraigned Monday via video from the Sullivan County House of Corrections, and was charged with three felonies before being released on $25,000 bail. Claremont Police say Underwood, and the minor, broke into the Central Street Church through a window early Sunday morning, where they sprayed fire extinguishers, stole and vandalized church property.
The two were arrested later Sunday afternoon. Underwood has not yet entered a plea and is due to appear back in court Sept. 14 for a probable cause hearing.
