Newport Tigers Football: Last Year’s Team vs. This Year’s Team

Last fall, the Newport Tigers football team was crowned division four champions. Today we’ll be taking a look back at last years team compared to this year’s upcoming team.

After the Newport Tigers football team won the division three state championship game by an overwhelming margin of 48 to 14, they sealed a perfect undefeated 11 and 0 season. And during those 11 wins, they outscored their opponents 481 to 95. This was the second straight year the Tigers had gone to the championship game, as they lost to Campbell in 2014.

But this upcoming 2016 season will differ greatly from the past two years as head coach Larry McElreavy resigned.

McElreavy leaves the program with a record of 20 and 2 over the past two season. The search for a new head coach has been ongoing throughout the Spring and Summer but recently a selection has been made.

Rich Boone will fill the shoes of McElreavy. Boone, a Newport resident, was the runner up pick two years ago before McElreavy was chosen. Boone played for Stevens High back in the 80s and is expected to continue the Tigers recent winning tradition.

Besides losing and gaining a new head coach, the Tigers graduated a number of key seniors which include fullback CJ Lawrence, wide receiver Stephan Nix and lineman Christian Lawrence. And of course, the division 3 player of the year, running back Noah Wade who ran for almost 2,000 yards and a total of 35 touchdowns during the Tigers championship year.

Newport will have some starters returning including lineman Tyler Hall and defensive end Dylan Gardner as the Tigers hope to make it back to the finals for a third consecutive year.

A bit of advice…don’t pre-print 3-pete t-shirts like we did in the ’90’s. It’s a bad omen. You’ll end up loosing to a sub-par team, due to hubris en mass!
