Cardinals Fall to Raymond in Early Round of DIII Playoffs

The division three NHIAA softball tournament kicked off Tuesday as the Stevens Cardinals hosted the Raymond Rams.

The Cardinals and Rams came into the tournament with records of 7 and 9 which means they held the 16th and 17th ranked positions for the playoffs respectively. Raymond was able to score a run in the third and another in the fourth to take a 2 to 0 lead. Stevens was held hitless through four innings until the fifth when things began to change. Jamie Barry was able to crush a pitch down the left-field line which turned into a triple for the Cardinals first hit.

Then the next batter Emma Shea, was able to hit a triple of her own. When the Rams attempted to relay the ball back into the infield, there was an error and Shea was able to scamper home to tie the game at 2 a piece.

But the Rams bats were hot as they were able to pile up 11 total hits which resulted in a four run sixth inning. Stevens starter pitched well but in the sixth she struggled at times with her command as the Rams were able to score multiple times on passed balls.

Raymond head coach and senior captain as well as Stevens head coach gave YCN their thoughts after the game.

Raymond will travel to take on the strong undefeated number 1 seed White Mountains Thursday.
