Monday, the Hartford High school Hurricanes softball team hosted the Bellows Falls Terriers.
Playing on a chilly windy afternoon at the very nice Maxfield Outdoor Sports Complex, Hartford hoped to come out on top against the Terriers in an attempt to secure a spot in the upcoming state playoffs. The Hurricanes scored five times in the first inning and by the third, Hartford led 8 to 1 until Bellows Falls was able to score 6 runs in the top of the fourth to cut Hartford’s lead to just 1.
Brooke Hurd took the mound for Hartford and pitched very well but her team’s defense simply did not back her up in the six-run fourth inning. The Hurricanes would then answer with a five run inning of their own in the bottom of the fourth to take back a commanding lead at 14 to 7.
By the end of the game Hartford was able to hold off Bellows Falls while recording 14 hits. The Hurricanes would win 14 to 8. Hurd would pitch all seven innings scattering five hits and six walks while allowing just four earned runs. Hartford head coach and starting pitcher spoke to YCN after the game.
Bellows Falls now sits at 3 and 9 while Hartford improves to 7 and 4.
