A few weeks ago, the girls basketball division two state championship matchup featured the Hanover Marauders and Goffstown Grizzlies. Let’s take a look at how the first quarter of this exciting game played out.
Coming into the game the number five ranked Hanover Marauders felt great. Earlier in the week they had beaten the number one ranked Portsmouth Clippers who were expected to be the toughest opponent in the division. So taking on the number seven ranked Goffstown Grizzlies was supposed to be a piece of cake especially since Hanover had already beaten the Grizzlies twice by double digits during the regular season.
As the game began, it was clear this was going to be a battle as both teams clearly came ready to play. Goffstown did however seem like they had something to prove while Hanover was clearly expecting an easy victory.
The Grizzlies started the game with a lot of momentum and quickly took an eight to two lead with Hanover’s Diana Schwarz scoring their first two points. With two and a half minutes remaining in the quarter Diana Schwarz makes a perfect pass to Caroline Rodi who lays it in for two.
Molly McQueeney stops the Marauders run by sinking a beautiful 3-point jumper which then makes the score Goffstown 11 Hanover 4.
The Marauders clearly start to feel the pressure as Caroline Merguerian steals the ball from Goffstown and dribbles down the court for a nice fast break layup. The Marauders would go on a 6 an 0 run to end the first quarter by a score of Hanover 10, Goffstown 11.
Hanover took Goffstown for granted to begin the game while Goffstown reminded the Marauders that they are in the finals for a reason.
