Tuesday, the Colby Sawyer College women’s basketball team played against visiting Middlebury in a battle for their home court.
Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket in the opening minutes of the with Colby Sawyer College leading 5 – 2 before Middlebury went on a 15 – 3 run to lead the Chargers 17 to 8 after the first quarter. Colby-Sawyer continued their poor shooting in the second quarter and found themselves down 29 to 15 at the half.
After falling behind by 20 points mid way through the third, the women’s team stepped up their defense and scored 10 unanswered points and were behind 37 – 27 going into the final quarter.
The Chargers continued to play hard and closed to within 5 points with under 2 minutes to play but could not get any closer in spite of winning the last two quarters and lost 46 – 37. Amanda Calvo ( #32) was team high scorer in the game with 12 points.
Sophomore Amanda Calvo was the lone Charger to reach double figures with 12 points and Junior Lexi Iannone added seven points and a team best six rebounds. Middlebury was led by sophomore Eileen Daley of Hanover, N.H. She recorded game-highs of 15 points with 7-of-11 and 14 rebounds.
Middlebury has evened its record to 12 and 12. Colby-Sawyer also maintains an even record at 12 and 12. The Chargers will play a North Atlantic Conference regular season finale at home on Saturday against New England College.
