The Newport girls varsity basketball team matched up with the visiting Interlakes Lakers at the Wheeler Gym Tuesday night. Both teams could not get their offense going in the first quarter with Newport holding a slim lead after one.
At the start of the second quarter Newport applied a full court press on defense that led to many easy baskets going on a 17 -8 run and leading at halftime score of 28 – 13. The two teams struggled offensively again in the third quarter and the leading scorer on the night, Kyrstin Kibby with 14 points, went down with an injury going after a loose ball and did not return to the game.
Newport was still ahead at 34 – 22 going into the final quarter and continued to play good defense and extended their lead.
The Newport Tigers girls won convincingly over Inter-Lakes 51 -33. Newport is now 10 -6 on the season and will play away at Pelam on Friday.
