Kearsarge Girls Pull Away for Big Road Win Over Mascoma

The Mascoma girls basketball team headed into Thursday night’s matchup with no wins so far this season. But with a struggling Kearsarge team in town with losses in eight of its last nine games, the Royals were hopeful their fortunes might change.

And that elusive first win didn’t seem far-fetched early for the home team, as the visiting Cougars struggled out of the gates to settle into their offense.

The Royals were quick to capitalize, too, with freshman Elizabeth Pelton converting aturn-around jumper, before finding Kayla Hammond for an open bucket here.

The home team trailed by just three points after the opening quarter, before Kearsarge finally kicked things into high gear. The Cougars saw offensive contributions throughout its roster over the game’s final three quarters, with senior guard Sydney Bryk showing her range on a lengthy jumper.

But it was the play of junior Devi Kraushaar that really made the difference, as the Royals had no answer for the power forward.

Kraushaar led all scorers with a season high 31 points, helping her team improve to 4-8 with six regular-season games remaining.
Both teams will be back in action Monday with Kearsarge traveling to Hopkinton, and Mascoma hosting Stevens.
