A 32-year-old Newport man was indicted on an additional charge of arson Wednesday as part of a lengthy investigation into a 2014 fire.
Police say Anthony Lantas was arrested late last year on one count of burglary to an unattended North Main Street home that was destroyed during an early morning fire in November of 2014.
Lantas was handed the additional charge of arson on Wednesday, and is scheduled to be arraigned in Sullivan County Superior Court on Feb. 4. The fire destroyed a single-family home and attached barn at 118 North Main Street in Newport, and prompted an immediate investigation with no power or ignitable sources being provided to the house.
Police arrested 39-year-old Frank Magistro back in August on charges of conspiracy to commit burglary – to which he was found guilty and is currently serving a 12-month sentence.
Newport Police Chief Jim Burroughs said in a press release that no additional charges are pending, and that their 13-month long investigation is now complete.
