We’ve brought you a few pieces on skiing so far this winter, but here’s one about another winter sport: ice skating! The Newport Skating Rink has officially opened for the season Thursday by the Newport Parks and Recreation Department, offering residents of Newport and surrounding towns a chance to get some free skating in at any hour of the day.
It’s located in the Town Common, at the North end, and you can not only skate for free, but you can rent skates free of charge as well, if you so desire.
There is a warming hut to fight those chilly temperatures during your skating adventure which has varying hours throughout the week, but is open from 9 AM to 7 PM on Saturday and 9 AM to 5 PM on Sunday. And if you haven’t guessed already, the warming hut is also free to use.
The condition of the ice depends on weather conditions and Newport Parks and Rec remind everyone to skate at your own risk meaning no loops or spins unless that’s your style!
