Lebanon Police Confirm Identity of Student Found Dead

An update in Tuesday’s top story as Lebanon police have officially confirmed the identity of a Dartmouth graduate student found dead on Friday afternoon. 28-year old Scott Smedinghoff was found deceased in his home on Ela Street on Friday during a wellness check requested after he hadn’t been heard from in several days.

The Dartmouth – the student run newspaper of Dartmouth College – was the first to identify the deceased to be Smedinghoff and police have just recently confirmed this identification to be correct.

Lebanon Police Chief Richard Mello said that there was no perceived threat to the general public and the death is not being considered suspicious.

An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. Smedinghoff was a fourth-year graduate student at Dartmouth who was working towards a doctorate in mathematics.

He was a pianist for the Dartmouth Wind Ensemble, and the choir director at the First Congregational Church in Thetford, Vermont.
