Family of Nine Displaced After Unity House Fire
Tuesday’s storm couldn’t have come at a worse time for a family of nine who were displaced from their Unity home after a devastating fire early Monday evening.
It took crews from numerous departments more than three hours to extinguish the blaze at 94 Sawyer Brook Road, which is believed to have been triggered by a faulty wood stove.
Crews from Unity responded to the scene shortly after 4:30 Monday afternoon to find the home already fully engulfed in flames, prompting authorities to upgrade the fire to a second alarm. Firefighters from Claremont, Newport, Charlestown and several other communities offered their assistance at the scene, and eventually had the situation under control by about 8:30 Monday night.
The family was home at the time of the fire, though no injuries were reported. The American Red Cross put the family up in a nearby hotel overnight.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though authorities are urging residents to use caution when heating their homes with wood stoves.
