Dartmouth Swimmer Drowns During Florida Vacation

The Dartmouth College community is mourning the death of a 21-year-old swimmer who drowned over the weekend while vacationing with his family down in Florida.

According to a press release issued by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, Tate Ramsden was pronounced dead at a YMCA swimming pool Saturday after lengthy attempts to revive him.

Authorities say Ramsden was trying to complete four laps underwater without surfacing to breathe, after already having swum approximately 4,000 yards. The Dartmouth junior was originally from Nashville, Tennessee, and was at the pool with his sister, uncle, and cousin while vacationing in Miami.

Ramsden was a member of the Dartmouth swim team both his freshman and sophomore years, and was scheduled to graduate with a degree in economics in 2017.

Dartmouth President Phil Hanlon expressed his sympathies to students and faculty in an email sent yesterday. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine a cause of death.
