Weekend Roundup of Local Basketball Action

There was plenty of action on the hardwood Friday night including season openers for boys basketball teams here in New Hampshire.

Mike Pezone started the night off in Sunapee to witness the defending Division IV champions to take to the court in their first home game of the season. The Lakers headed into the contest fresh off a convincing win in its opener earlier in the week, and picked up right where it left off, holding Woodsville to a single point after the first eight minutes of play on their way to a 71-30 win.

Katie Frederick led the home team with an impressive 23 points on the night, while senior point guard Lexie Hamilton added 16 points to complement her eight assists. Sydney Clark added 13 points for Sunapee, including this nifty-reverse layup.

From there, Mike headed up to Claremont to watch a pair of local teams go head-to-head in their first regular season action of the season. And while it was visiting Kearsarge who held a slim lead for the majority of the contest, the Cardinals kept at it, and even took a 1-point advantage in the final quarter.

But the Cougars held on when it mattered most, clinching a 69-66 victory behind a game-high 23 points from senior Trent Noordsij. Kearsarge big man Tayler Mattos added 19 points with some solid play in the paint, while Noah Spaulding finished with a team-high 21 points for Stevens.

Zach O’Briend also played well for the Cardinals with 12 points, followed by Parker Smith with 11.
The Lakers are back in action tonight against rival Newport, while both Kearsarge and Stevens have a couple days off before their second outings of the season.
