This past Saturday, people from all over the region came to Newport to see and taste who had the best chili at the 17th Annual Chili Walk held on Newport’s Main Street.
Fourteen businesses and many individuals served up their secret chili recipes to a large crowd on a warm December night. A few chili cooks ran out of chili early as the number of people was more the estimated due to the warm weather.
After the chili was tasted and the votes counted, the winners in the business category were KJ’s Cafe in first place, Salt Hill Pub in second, and third was Sullivan County Healthcare.
John Hooper took first in the individual category with Matt Shepard second and Heidi North third. Money raised at the Chili Walk was split between The Newport Food Pantry and the Wiley Perra Christmas Fund.
The Chili Walk was part of the Twas Just Before Christmas celebration that featured horse drawn wagon rides, marshmallow roasting, and a visit from Santa Claus.
