An update on a story we brought you earlier this week as the building that housed the former Twisted Fitness gym right here in Claremont was officially auctioned off Tuesday.
The Pleasant Street building was appraised at a value of a little more than $170-thousand dollars earlier this year, but sold yesterday at a significant discount with just one registered bidder. That bidder – in Mascoma Savings Bank – placed an opening bid of $60-thousand dollars, prompting auctioneer James R. St. Jean of Manchester to declare the bank an immediate winner.
Mascoma Savings Bank previously held the mortgage on the property that was foreclosed on owners Leigh Ann and Jon Root just before Thanksgiving.
The Roots had owned the business for more than 17 years, but faced financial difficulties when the Claremont Savings Bank Community Center was opened back in 2013. The three-story, brick exterior building was built in 1900.
