SPRINGFIELD – It was opening night for a pair of our local teams Thursday night as the Springfield and Woodstock girls basketball teams went head-to-head on the hardwood.
The matchup pinned a pair of first year coaches against each other in Springfield’s Joseph Costello and Woodstock’s Justin Smith, who both had little idea of what to expect from their respective teams. And while it was the Cosmos who held slim leads after each of the first-two checkpoints, it was Woodstock who left celebrating a 37-26 victory after an 11-0 run to close the game.
Mariah Luce led a well-rounded scoring effort with the Wasps, finishing with 10 points, including this early 3-pointer. Maddie Schultz added nine points for the visiting team, while Natausha Smallwood added seven. Springfield had plenty of highlights themselves in the contest, with seniors Brooke Willey and Diamond Bruso making their presence felt early and often.
Mike Pezone spoke with Woodstock coach Justin Smith after the game, and asked him what the win taught him about his team.
Woodstock will be back in action Tuesday when it hosts Long Trail, and Springfield will travel to face Brattleboro on Wednesday.
