Police in Bellows Falls arrested two men late last week caught red handed trying to steal copper piping from the basement of a Hapgood Street Extension residence.
According to a press release, officers responded to the scene shortly before 11:30 Thursday morning to find Keith Tyrrell, Jr., and Gary Lescord – both of Bellows Falls – removing copper piping from the residence. The two were taken into custody without incident, and were being held at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield for lack of $5,000 bail.
Police did not say whether anybody was home at the time of the attempted burglary, or how they were alerted of the crime. Copper piping remains a popular commodity for thieves for its increasing value which is currently at about $1.70 per pound.
Officials are urging homeowners to use diligence when closing cabins for the winter, and to always report suspicious vehicles in residential areas.
