Charges Still Being Considered in Fatal Crash

Charges against a 23-year-old log truck driver who struck and killed a fellow trucker on Interstate 91 in Norwich this summer could still be on the way as prosecutors continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

According to Vermont State Police, Mason Morissette, of Maine, hit David Stefanik, of Florida, while Stefanik was standing outside his broken down tractor trailer on the side of the highway. Police say the log truck sideswiped Stefanik and his tractor-trailer, while “possibly” examining his flat tire at the time of the collision.

Stefanik was pronounced dead at the scene. Morissette was cited to Windsor Superior Court in September on an offense of gross negligent operation of a vehicle with a fatality resulting – a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison – though the state’s Attorney General’s Office has yet to file formal charges.

According to the Valley News, prosecutors are still accessing the line of vision Morissette had in his vehicle at the time of the collision.
