The Sunapee boys soccer team headed into Monday’s matchup with Epping in desperate need of a win in order to qualify for postseason play.
And though the Lakers did strike first with the game’s first goal when Lane Smith redirected this pass from Will Austin into the back of the net midway through the first half, it was Epping who left celebrating a 2-1 victory to improve to 10-4 on the year.
Epping tied things up with a score late in the first half, before netting what proved to be the game-winning goal just six minutes into the second half. Senior Cole Cruz played well in net for Sunapee, turning aside seven of the nine shots he faced.
The Lakers are now 3-11-1 on the season, and will have just one more chance to improve its playoff resume Thursday when it welcomes Wilton-Lyndeborough to town.
Sunapee beat the Warriors 1-0 when the teams met back in August.
The Lakers would also need Groveton – who is 3-10-1 on the year – to loss in its regular-season finale in order to make the playoffs.
