The Newport golf team had a pretty big target on its back after winning last year’s Division IV title. And unfortunately for the competition, that target didn’t do much to take the Tigers off their game during their quest to repeat Thursday at Waukewan Golf Course in Center Harbor, New Hampshire.
The Tigers headed into the 18-hole tournament as heavy favorite after returning two to its top three scorers from last year’s team, and that hype was more than worthy as the team shot its way to a 19-stroke victory over runner-up Moultonborough.
And as expected, it was seniors Dawson Campbell and Cameron Gebo who ran away from the field, with Campbell posting the low round of the day at 77, and Gebo coming in just behind at 78. From there, Gabe Edwards, Brandon Whalen and Kyle Fish held up their end of the bargain in posting an impressive team score of 354.
Newport’s neighbor in Sunapee also fared well in the Division IV competition with a fourth-place overall finish, while in Division III, it was the Fall Mountain Wildcats who shot their way to a runner-up finish with a 340, 19, stokes behind Division III champs Bow.
