City of Claremont Trying Once More to Sell Goodwin Community Center

Once again, the city of Claremont is trying to sell the former Goodwin Community Center and its indoor pool and gymnasium after receiving no offers in its previous attempt.

The building – located on Broad Street near the the Claremont Post Office – was closed in March of 2013 after nearly 70 years of operation under the city’s stewardship. The building’s pool – the former home of the Stevens High swim team – is more than 60 years old, with its gymnasium also dating back around 40 years.

The former community center is listed at $121,000, and sits on an 11/2-acre plot, but is said to need significant improvements to meet city codes. Before it could put the building up for sale, city officials had to seek approval from the courts to eliminate a restriction that the property could only be used for recreational purposes.

If sold, proceeds would go into an account created last year to fund improvements to the city’s recreational facilities.
