Stevens Football Suffers First Loss As Lakers Spoil Homecoming

Well it was quite the atmosphere at Barnes Park in Claremont Friday night as the Stevens football team put its unbeaten record on the line against 3-1 Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough.

And though it was the Cardinals who headed into the contest without a loss so far this year, it was Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough who took control early, pounding its way to a 20-0 first-quarter lead and an eventual 42-0 shutout victory.

The Lakers’ oversized offensive line had Stevens on its heels all night, but the Cardinals defense was up to the task at times, forcing three turnovers in all on drives that could have easily ended with scores from the opposition. Stevens cornerback Parker Smith tallied one of those turnovers with this drive-ending interception, and also made several drive extending receptions on passes from quarterback Richard Bell.

Bell finished 5-for-16 from the air for the home team, finishing with 32 throwing yards. Nick Brothers led the Lakers with 156 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Malik Carter added 68 rushing yards and a pair of scores from the ground.

Coach Paul Silva’s team will be off this week, before it travels East to take on its biggest rival in unbeaten Newport on October 17.
The Cardinals are now 3rd in the Division III North standings behind Newport and Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough
