New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan announced Monday that she’s running for U.S. Senate in the upcoming 2016 elections. Hassan made the announcement through a YouTube video, ending months of speculation on a potential run against GOP incumbent Kelly Ayotte.
Hassan was elected Governor in 2012, and was re-elected to a second term in 2014. She will become the first democratic candidate to challenge Ayotte since she was elected to her seat in 2010.
Women’s issues are expected to be at the forefront of the campaign, with Ayotte a supporter of not funding Planned Parenthood while Hassan has been extremely vocal on the pros of the health care facility.
Hassan’s announcement comes just two weeks after reaching a bipartisan deal with legislators on an $11.3 billion dollar budget after a months-long stalemate. Former New Hampshire Governor and democrat Jeanne Shaheen holds New Hampshire’s second Senate seat.
