SPRINGFIELD – Three local men were in federal court Thursday on charges of running a bath salt distribution ring out of Springfield, Vermont. 56-year-old Michael DePalma of Plainfield, 51-year-old Louis Turcio of Springfield, and 52-year-old Andrew Darling of North Walpole were indicted last week after a lengthy investigation involving multiple local, state and federal agencies.
Bath salts have made headlines in recent months, for their ability to be used as a kind of synthetic drug with mood-altering stimulants.
According to a press release issued by the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont, the months-long distribution ring involved the on-line ordering of substantial amounts of bath salts from a Chinese supplier, where they were then arranged for delivery in both Vermont and New Hampshire.
The three face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and fines of up to $1 million dollars, and are being held without bail pending their detention hearings.
