Springfield and Brattleboro Field Hockey Reach Draw
It’s been awhile since we’ve checked in on any of our local field hockey teams, so last night Mike Pezone, headed over to Springfield High School to watch the Division II Cosmos take on Division I Brattleboro.
The Cosmos headed into the contest winless at 0-3, with Brattleboro not that far ahead of the curve at 1-3.
And the teams were neck and neck from the opening whistle, with both teams having their share of scoring opportunities early in the first half. Unfortunately for the home team, however, it was the Colonels who struck first with the game’s first goal when Grace Frost scored with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first half.
And Brattleboro didn’t take long to add to that lead after halftime, as Marley Lynch found Hannah Wilson open after a penalty corner, setting the stages for a lofted shot that landed in the back of the cage for a 2-0 advantage.
But Springfield continued fighting despite the deficit, and narrowed the gap to 2-1 less than two minutes later when Alisha Dykes collected a rebound off an Emilia Battista shot and sent it past Brattleboro’s keeper for her team’s first goal of the contest. Then, with the team less than 3-minutes away from its 4th loss of the season, the Cosmos struck again as a pass from Erika Schott found Battista who sent a one-timer into the cage to knot things up at 2-all.
The teams battled hard through a 10-minute overtime period, but neither squad found the back of the game again, resulting in the first tie of the season for both Springfield and Brattleboro.
