A Sullivan County man was sentenced to seven to 15 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to shaking his 5-month-old son because he wouldn’t stop crying. 26-year-old Jerry Carrier pleaded guilty to a felony charge of first-degree assault and a misdemeanor charge of simple assault in connection with two incidents in January of 2014 that took place in Newport and Charlestown.
Police say Carrier admitted to shaking the infant because he wouldn’t stop crying while the man was playing video games. The child suffered severe internal injuries, including a liver injury, retinal hemorrhages and a subdural hematoma.
Carrier, who has previous convictions on theft and assault charges, has said he suffers from bipolar disorder, and apologized to the child’s mother and her family for the pain he caused.
